Doing the Essential

“The Key to Success?  Doing Less” is the intriguing title of a 2018 article in the Wall Street Journal.  In the piece author Morten T. Hansen touts the value of taking on fewer tasks — the ones most critical to your job or business — and eliminating the rest.

He suggests that rather than obsess over numerical goals, the best performers ask: “What value can I create?”  I agree, and would add, “What can I do that only I can do?  How can I maximize my time and my efforts?”

In our book “Beyond the Sale—for Real Estate Agents”  Ken Tutunjian and I wrote:  “Do the things you are best at, and hire people to do the things they are best at.”

What’s most essential to your business?

In real estate sales there are five key tasks that lead to success.  These are marketing and promotion, obtaining listings, selectively working with buyers, negotiating offers, and resolving problems.  In other professional service businesses there may be different key tasks, but they always include marketing and promotion, closing sales, contract negotiation, service delivery, and problem resolution.

What are the most critical tasks in your business?  Which ones can you delegate?

Here are six reasons to get good at delegating:

 1.    Delegating will give you time to go out and create    relationships to grow your business.

 2.    Delegating will give you time to have a life outside of work.

 3.    You can’t do everything by yourself.

 4.   You can’t do everything well by yourself.  It’s not possible to be great at all aspects of your business.  If you are a rainmaker, how can you also be a great bookkeeper, web designer and social media manager?

 5.   It’s not cost-effective for you to do everything yourself.  If your time is worth, say $150. an hour, you can pay someone else much less to perform many tasks for you.

 6.   You are empowering others when you delegate many aspects of your business.  It’s very satisfying to see people use their creativity, develop their potential, and grow under your management.

 So…

What are you willing to delegate?  Which tasks are you afraid to delegate, but by doing so, it will provide you more time to grow your business and enhance the quality of your life?

Do you want support and a new perspective to help you grow your business quickly and easily?  Do you want to become more productive?
